I used to have a security guard job at a gated retirement community in Orange county. From midnight to eight in the morning, I had to do little more than stay awake.

I'd have gladly done that job for the rest of my life if i hadn't started getting too many DJ gigs.

I had access to a lot of resources there, so I was never bored. They had a library, a gym, computers left on with internet access, and an art studio. Plus, I got to drive around on a little golf cart

One night, probably to combat the sleepiness that would often strike, I made these images of author Henry Miller superimposed upon his own writing.

I photocopied several random pages from his book, The Air-Conditioned Nightmare (There was no need to look for especially profound or colorful passages, as every page is like that with Miller), blowing them up to fill an 8.5" x 11" piece of paper, and sliding the book around a bit as it was scanned, to give the text some wobbly distortion.

Then I blew up the photo accompanying the About the Author bio in the front of the book, and headed up to the art studio on the third floor.

I traced the outlines of the shadowy shapes onto a piece of acetate, and cut them out with an exacto knife. placing the finished stencil on top of the xeroxed pages of wobbly text, I brushed on dark blue acryllic paint.

It's raw and immediate. I might humbly say that the author would approve, but then, it seems he was a hard man to please
